ABOUT SUSTAINABLE NORTH CAROLINA

Sustainable North Carolina (SNC) is accelerating the adoption of principles and practices that optimize economic prosperity, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship throughout our state. Current programs include our annual conference, awards recognition program, and the NC Sustainable Business Council. Our network of professionals from business, nonprofit and government is generating innovative strategies and tools to help North Carolina prosper indefinitely.

SUSTAINABILITY
|
The basic concept of sustainability is a simple one—let’s find ways of doing things that will maintain the long term health of the natural and social systems we all depend upon for life, while providing sound economic returns.
The challenge lies in that our current economic and industrial models are based on out-of-date premises about inexhaustible natural resources and humankind’s ability to impact global systems. Just as the mere idea that the Earth revolves around the Sun required a fundamental shift in how humans saw themselves in relation to the universe in Galileo’s time, sustainability requires that we rethink our relationship to nature and to each other today.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Companies large and small around the world are beginning to make the shift into sustainability. And they aren’t doing it solely for public relations or philanthropic purposes. Just as keeping factories and equipment in working order makes good business sense, so does maintaining the productivity of our natural and social assets. Forward-looking organizations realize that their long term financial viability is dependent on social stability, the continued availability of natural resources and innovative business models.
